Hidden Passage
While walking upstream on Flat Branch, many obstacles contributed to my adventure. However, I was delighted the most by the way this waterfall was hidden. After scrambling above the previous waterfall, it seemed like I couldn't continue to hike upstream. At first, I couldn't even see the stream. Then I discovered a narrow slot between the boulders where I could squeeze through (only after turning sideways). That allowed me to drop down into a pool where boulders partially dammed the branch. I walked through the pool, with boulders on three sides of me. I emerged from the confines of the pool and looked to my left. That's when I first saw this waterfall at the end of a narrow passageway. As I walked to this photo location, a rock shelter was on my right. A huge boulder on my left formed the other wall of the passageway.
It wasn't possible to hike past this waterfall to continue exploring further upstream. I saved that adventure for another day when I accessed the branch from further upstream. This is Flat Branch Falls 5 in McCreary County, Kentucky.
